About the musicians:
Dorian May’s piano artistry shapes together classic, modern and Latin jazz with Bach harmony, world and poly rhythms, and he is equally at home in world music and classical music as he is with hard-swinging bebop, Cuban Salsa and down- home blues. His diverse collection of influences include a degree in classical piano performance, keyboardist in a touring Emerson, Lake & Palmer tribute band, high-school band director, world percussionist/accompanist at world music and jazz festivals and currently leader & arranger for several Mendocino and Sonoma-county based jazz and Latin bands. When not performing, practicing or teaching he is working on his own unique improvisational system based on George Russell’s Lydian chromatic concept.
Harrison Goldberg, showcasing his trademark tenor, alto and soprano saxophones performs in a variety of groups throughout Mendonoma. He has been playing professionally since he was seventeen years old, when his pianist Mother first introduced him to the beautiful tunes in The Great American Songbook, and the irresistible sax sound of Stan Getz captured his musical imagination. Goldberg has appeared in the Sonoma-Mendocino Coast Whale & Jazz Festival each year since its inception. Over the past few years, in creative collaboration with other musicians he has released several albums of jazz fusion and improvisational material.
Growing up in Germany, music was a big part of Dorothea May’s life. She played mallet percussion in the school orchestra, keyboard in an all-female punk band and recorders in a baroque ensemble. In her 30’s, after a few years of immersing herself in world music and dance, she fell in love with the double bass. She especially loves the rhythmic nature of the instrument in Jazz and Latin music and her influences include Ray Brown, Cachao, Christian McBride and Paul Chambers.
Admission to this event is free.
Paired to the evening's jazz showcase, delicious sweet and savory small plate offerings accompanied by a full assortment of wines and other beverages, including non-alcoholic items, will be available for purchase.
